:: FAMILY PROMISE: Hosting Homeless Families at OSLC – Jan 29 – Feb 3
“A mother loses her job, a father is kept from working by an injury, a family is forced from their home by fire or natural disaster. Healthcare costs soar, public transportation is underfunded, affordable housing is almost impossible to find. These are the reasons why families now make up 40 percent of the homeless population, and why one out of every four homeless people is a child.” — Interfaith Hospitality Network Website
Four times a year, Our Savior Lutheran Church hosts homeless families for a week at a time. Although a homeless shelter is available locally, the overnight accommodations are not ideal for families. Sleeping arrangements are single sexed, often separating family members overnight. We provide a place where families can stay together.
Two kinds of volunteers are needed to help in this effort:
EARLY EVENING VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers play with kids, help them do homework, etc. This shift lasts from 6-9pm any weekday night during the week that OSLC is hosting Family Promise in the church.
OVERNIGHT VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers stay overnight at the church from 9pm to 6:30am. The overnight shift is a great time to study in a quiet place with internet accessibility, so you can get homework done, yet still help in the hosting families. You simply need to be willing and able to attend to any unforeseen needs that may arise in the middle of the night.
Additional Opportunities in the day center are also available.
